Basic Editing Tutorial
Even though the editor page has a short (optional) blurb of some of the basic WIKI codes, we wanted to write up a tutorial for our customers. The very basic aspect of the editor is, you simply type in the text you wish to publish for others to find/view. Treat it like a basic email, you type, press enter, etc. Manually you are formatting your text into paragraphs -- on a wiki, it works the exact same way...
We press enter to start another paragraph, continuing on to a new subject. Now, focusing on the aspect of simply writing your thoughts -- on the server when you save your content -- there are a lot of behind the scene tasks occurring. Parsing your text into search-able words, then filtering from that word-lists things from our pronouns filter, filtering inappropriate words and slang, and linking other pages to your topic. During this parsing phase the WIKI Server is also looking for certain character patterns, sometimes called tokens. These tokens or patterns have special meaning to the engine for the web browser -- converting your text characters into a wide range of HTML code. However, you do not need to know anything more than what patterns to use to achieve a look you need.
For example, one may want to put emphasis on certain words or phrases.
Italics is toggled on and off by typing two apostrophes in a row. The first occurrence of that token will enable the browser to switch to an italic font. The next occurrence will disable italics and return to the previous font or mode. Every WIKI Server provides you with different tokens, we have tried to collect into our product tokens which are common to the most popular WIKI Servers. If you have never edited a Wiki page, you may find this a little overwhelming at first. However, take your time and read the examples and think about what you want to say. Or if you are editing an existing topic, decide what you want to change or add before you click Edit. As the first time you see all the text come up on your screen (especially if the previous editor(s) were advanced) you may be lost about what you wanted to say or fix... or even be lost on where to place your cursor and start typing.
If you read the content, you will find where you can type your fixes or additions. Place your cursor at the correct spot, and simply start typing. If you make a mistake, you can always edit and fix it. And if it is a total disaster, you can always contact the web master and they can review the archive logs and pull out a previous version of the content. A powerful feature, especially if someone comes to your wiki and is abusive, you simply rollback to the previous version of the content. As we tell people, with freedom comes responsibility, however some people think freedom is owed to them.
